CSV Export – Opening in Excel with Separate Columns

Created by Michael Brander, Modified on Mon, 8 Sep at 8:59 AM by Michael Brander

Issue:
When downloading the CSV export, replies may appear in a single column when opened in Excel.

Background:

  • The exported file is a CSV using semicolons ( ; ) as delimiters.
  • Whether Excel automatically splits the data into columns depends on the regional settings of the user’s computer:

Solutions:

  1. Recommended Import (works everywhere):
    • In Excel, go to Data  Get External Data  From Text/CSV.
    • Select the CSV file and choose Semicolon as the delimiter.
    • Excel will then display the data in separate columns.
  2. Alternative (quick fix if file is already open):
    • Select the column containing all replies.
    • Go to Data  Text to Columns.
    • Choose Delimited  Semicolon.
